The perfect storm. How CPR saved my life and what I did post-emergency
It can happen to anyone at any time, including Kelly R, a 47 year old yoga therapist in April, 2021. She had recovered from CoVID-19 and was at home enjoying her hot tub. She got out to head inside through her basement, said to her husband she wasn’t feeling well, and that’s the last thing she remembers.
Kelly had collapsed. Her husband jumped into action seeing his wife on the floor. After asking their child to call 911, Kelly’s husband began chest compressions immediately with the dispatcher’s guidance. He continued chest compressions only for 10 minutes until help arrived.
Kelly was then transferred via ambulance to Phoenixville Hospital and continued to receive care. Once stable, she realized her collapse was the result of the “perfect storm” – recovering from CoVId, leaving a hot environment immediately entering a cold one, and being diagnosed with long QT- which was unknown until post-collapse.
While recovering at home, Kelly realized that if someone else were to require CPR, she wouldn’t know how to respond. With that thought, she took action and signed up for a class with Shoen Safety and Training three and a half years after her own collapse. “It could happen to anyone, at any time,” she says. “It really could save someone’s life. I feel comforted knowing I could respond in the event of an emergency. This is a skill everyone should have.”
